How to administer oil before your appointment
Wax Softening with Olive Oil: Instructions
If you have hard wax, it's essential to soften it for 2-3 days before your appointment using olive oil. Follow these steps for optimal results:
- Warm the Drops**: Before applying, warm the olive oil drops to a comfortable temperature.
- Prepare**: Lie on your side with the affected ear facing upward.
- Straighten the Ear Canal**: Gently pull the outer ear backward and upward.
- Apply the Oil**: Place 2-3 drops of olive oil into the affected ear(s). Gently massage the area just in front of the ear.
- Let it Soak**: Remain lying on your side for 10 minutes to allow the wax to absorb the oil.
- Clean Up**: Wipe away away any excess oil, but do not plug your ear with cotton wool, as this will absorb the oil.
Tips and Warnings
- Spray Bottle**: An olive oil spray bottle can work well for this process.
- Blocked Sensation**: Your ears might feel more blocked initially as the wax softens and swells. Keep going—the wax will eventually shift and soften further, leading to relief.
- Bad Taste**: If you experience a bad taste in your throat after using oil, stop immediately and consult your GP. This could indicate a perforation.
- Hearing Aids**: If you wear hearing aids, avoid using them while applying oil. The oil can block the tubing/filters and potentially damage the aids, which may not be covered by your warranty.
- Discomfort**: Some people might experience discomfort when using oil. If this happens, speak to your GP or pharmacist.
